Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show  | Angels Among Us

“For every angel fluttering through the skies, there is a divine counterpart here on Earth.”
~ Angels in Our Midst

Picture

With a simple online search, you can delve into the extensive list of Angels mentioned in theology. Angels have always been a popular subject in very early
art forms such as paintings and sculpture. The fascination with these celestial beings has no doubt translated into the modern Fashion industry which began with fashion houses run by designers in the 19th century.  Shortly after the beginning of Fashion as an industry, a lovely lady named Jane Burden Morris who was a well-known muse of her time and model for many prominent English artists’ came to embody the Pre-Raphaelite ideal of beauty. With the use of her long hair and features made somewhat more androgynous, they created a prototype “Victorian Angel,” which would appear in paintings and stained glass windows. She ended up marrying the poet and English textile designer William Morris.

Roy and Gaye Raymond are another husband-and-wife team known in the world of fine art. The Raymond’s are known as the founders of the brand Victoria’s Secret. The hubs picked the name "Victoria" for the fashion label after Queen Victoria of the UK to associate with the refinement of the Victorian era. The “angels” came from his wife being in a sorority where their mascot was an angel. Adorbs!

On that note, here are my favorite looks from this years annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show (featured in Vogue Magazine) in NYC which ended its two-year trip abroad amidst the VS afterparty being shut down by midnight last year (WTH?!).

October 2018

THE FASHION AWARDS 2018 IN PARTNERSHIP WITH SWAROVSKI
CELEBRATE NEW WAVE: CREATIVES
The British Fashion Council is delighted to announce that this year, for the first time, The Fashion Awards 2018 in partnership with Swarovski, will celebrate the global community of young creative talent by recognising 100 of the most innovative and inspiring young creative talents from around the world via a new element to the awards; NEW WAVE: Creatives.

The 2000 members of the international fashion community that make up the Fashion Awards Voting Panel, were asked to nominate those they believe to be the best young creative talent of today. Shining a light on this year’s emerging visionaries, NEW WAVE: Creatives will include trailblazers from image-makers, hair and makeup artists, set designers, creative directors, models, digital influencers and stylists. The final list will encompass 100 names and will include some of fashion’s most exciting and forward-thinking young professionals. The criteria was simply to vote for the most creative new wave of talent across creative disciplines in fashion.

NEW WAVE: Creatives will be celebrated at The Fashion Awards 2018 in partnership with Swarovski on Monday 10th December at the Royal Albert Hall but also during a series of satellite events leading up to the ceremony, in London, Shanghai and New York.
The Fashion Awards in partnership with Swarovski recognises creativity and innovation in fashion, celebrating exceptional brands, businesses and individuals whose imaginations and creativity have broken new ground globally. In the past 12 months, these innovators have transformed the possibilities of fashion today. NEW WAVE: Creatives highlights London’s position as an international hub and pays homage to the incredible success of both home-grown and international talent, while celebrating all those who play a vital role in the industry’s cultural and creative reputation.

Today, at an event at The Middle House Shanghai, Caroline Rush, Chief Executive British Fashion Council unveiled the first twenty names of the group and celebrated their achievements with key media, retailers, partners and industry professionals. More young creatives from the shortlist will be unveiled in London and New York over the coming weeks.

We are delighted to be launching NEW WAVE: Creatives this year, to highlight and celebrate creatives from all around the world, to inspire new collaborations and to encourage an even younger generation to consider the many creative roles that make up the fashion industry and follow in their footsteps.”
The Fashion Awards in partnership with Swarovski is a fundraiser for the British Fashion Council, a not-for-profit organisation focused on promoting excellence in British fashion and supporting the future pipeline of creative talent. The BFC’s work is achieved through a range of charitable initiatives and education, business and mentoring schemes that support a pyramid of creatives from school level students, to emerging designers and future fashion start-ups, through to established designer businesses.

In 2017, The British Fashion Council raised over £2.2million for its charities and business support initiatives and in the twelve months to March 2018 has allocated £1.1million to further support these efforts. As part of its Education pillar, the BFC’s education initiatives are designed to secure the legacy of support for talented students at every stage, safeguarding the opportunity to further education regardless of financial situation.

Nominees and winners for The Fashion Awards 2018 in partnership with Swarovski are voted for by an international judging panel of over 2,000 key industry figures from all corners of the global fashion industry. A number of special recognition awards are also presented on the night and announced in advance, in recognition of the weight of the achievements they represent. Nominees for The Fashion Awards 2018 in partnership with Swarovski will be announced on Tuesday 23rd October.

If you skim through the Business of Fashion’s annual report you can’t help but notice sustainability as THE core principle of the year. You can see this growing philosophy of Design emerging everywhere around you if you give yourself the time to stop, observe and listen. The British Fashion Council continues to boost its Positive Fashion initiative, self-proclaimed as: “a platform designed to celebrate industry best practice and encourage future business decisions to create positive change.”

Picture
As London continues to expand its global fashion presence with World class brands, it was exciting news to hear that the Vogue Designer Fashion Fund has renewed its partnership with JD.com, China’s largest retailer.

Fashion Collaboration at its very best!

London isn’t the only City that agrees with the social responsibility of fashion’s agenda, although some industry insiders will claim that out of the Big Four, London remains elevated when considering global fashion meccas.

According to the BBC, “Not only is London the greatest, most dynamic city in the world, it’s never been better than it is now. Move over, New York.” (disclaimer: not my words! #iheartNY)

But who knows what the Future of Fashion holds. The BoF eloquently states, “The fashion industry is going through a seismic shift.”  Enough said. I like to think of Fashion as the highest modern Art form. An experimental platform for gallant paragons to develop and share their most revolutionary ideas until those ideas take shape and trickle down into the common sphere of what is trending. And then people can buy those ideas. And look svelte wearing them!

You can do a simple search on Google and see that there is no shortage of comparisons over which city is the winner of the fashion capital of the 21st century. However, perhaps what we should be focusing on is the omnichannel as an entire industry shifts to provide a premium shopping experience for its upwardly mobile customers.

That being said, let us move on to the more important details of the Big Four Fashion Weeks. The FASHION...

Here are my 5 favorite upcoming trends shown at the Fashion Weeks this past month. Be on the lookout for them in 2019!

  1. Colour Harmonies and the coin pendant necklace (see image).
  2. A return to sensuality and sophistication.  Mother of Pearl’s well-executed Collection was drawn upon references from her childhood in the North of England and was inspired by the strength and femininity of the women who surrounded her. How perfectly au courant.

3.  The sustainability initiative. This year marked the introduction of digital passes at London Fashion Week, reducing paper and plastic waste from all future events. As an environmental advocate myself, I began the first paper recycling program at my High School which is still in place to this day. So needless to say, this “trend” is definitely a step in the right direction for everything and everyone.

4.  Embracing change in digital fashion.  From what I have seen, it seems to be Germany who has a single-pointed focus on the application of digital technology in its many forms for the production and consumption of fashion apparel and services. Is it tech? Is it fashion? Time will tell.

5.  Fringe and nothing but (ethical) furry bags and shoes. Need I say more?

I will finish this article with two quotes meant to uplift and inspire, which is what fashion does in my life every single day.

“And in time of politic division, when border seem to be closing, it is important that we celebrate what can unite."
~ The British Fashion Council, 2018

“Come together right now,
Over me”
~ The Beatles, 1969

Let’s make 2019 one for the books!

XOXO,
Kelly

SUMTER'S FIRST FASHION WEEK

8/30/2018

“Sumter’s Initiation into Fashion” began last Wednesday, on August the 22nd with a Who's Who of Sumter's Celebrity Kickoff event and ran until Saturday, August 25th with 2 runway shows.  There was also a meet and greet with the models and designers.

Sumter Fashion Week is quite the talk of the town at the moment. You can hear fashion week details on both 100.1 The Beat, WNOK radio in Columbia and on Hot 103.9.

Things are heating up in South Carolina. This past weekend marked the inauguration of a beautiful and stylish week that will take place in Sumter, South Carolina.  For those who have not been lucky enough to spend some time here, the locals will tell you how the city and county of Sumter bear the name of General Thomas Sumter, also known as, the "Fighting Gamecock."  And speaking of the South Carolina Gamecocks, the football team happens to take on Coastal Carolina for their season opener this Saturday. Sports and fashion, a match made in Heaven.

This is what Sumter Fashion Week promised, “Sumter Fashion Week will be engineering the global fashion experience and attracting industry influencers with a passport to arts, culture, fashion, and entertainment. Fashion is more than just the clothes, it is a movement, a feeling, and an expression.”  Their promise was fulfilled.

As a side note, when all of you Gamecock fans are watching Saturday’s game, just remember where your name came from.

Sports and Fashion. A match made on (and off) the field.

Latonya Franklin of MoodSwing Magazine had this to say, “I think that this will be the start of a fabulous thing for Sumter.”

The final night of fashion week began at the historic O’donnell house.  The two story Italianate design home, touched by renowned architect Frank Pierce Milburn, and its picturesque decor worked as the perfect backdrop for the evening of runway shows.

VIP FASHION SUMMERING... QUEEN CITY STYLE

8/3/2018

Just the other weekend I was lucky enough to be Guest Listed for the private Press and Media Event for the kick-off of Charlotte Fashion Week. The party was hosted in the historic Uptown neighborhood (near the Bank of America Stadium - Go Panthers!) on the top floor at The Vue, the tallest residential building in the state.  Although the line to get into the party stretched from the lobby all the way around the outside of the building when I arrived, the concierge did a wonderful job of escorting all of the guests up to the 50th floor in a relaxed manner.  When I first approached the building, I was in awe at the luxurious surroundings as a few well-dressed ladies passed by swiftly, their heels clanking on the concrete while I overheard one of the ladies say to the others, “they had to deny us entry since it was a private party - we will have to be prepared for this the next time!”
Picture

As I exited the elevator and entered the event space, I was greeted by some familiar faces and other soon-to-be familiar faces.  I stopped to take a selfie at the “ARE YOU THE NEXT TOP MODEL?” sign that was as tall as I was before moseying my way into the backstage area where the hair and makeup artists were controlling the chaos of BTS model prep.

After I said my introductions and snapped a few photos at one of the press walls, I could hear the recognizable throbbing beat of Calvin Harris with Rhianna crooning, “Baby, this is what you came for / Lightning strikes every time she moves / And everybody's watching her / but she's looking at you” - one of my all-time favorite songs when modeling on the runway!

As I danced my way through the crowd outside I noticed a plethora of friendly-looking guests of the party mingling, swimming and dancing by the rooftop pool. Everyone was having a fabulous time!  My main priority was to get a good seat for the Summer Seen Fashion Show for swimsuit and resort wear. So I scoped out the seen and ended up in this lovely cabana in the shade next to a stylishly dressed quaintrelle rocking the most beautiful shade of bubblegum-pink lipstick.  Her name was Danielle and she was a HUGE fan of the city, and this was her third weekend traveling to Charlotte from NYC.  We became great friends.

Being able to relax with a Summer-themed cocktail created by SOCIAL HOUSE VODKA while watching runway shows from a poolside cabana featuring the latest Summer trends was simply an afternoon delight.

As I am sure many other fashion enthusiasts in the Southeast will agree, it was a fun-filled and glamorous week had by many at this years annual Fashion Week in Columbia, South Carolina.  The event was created for people from all ages and walks of life and the party just keeps on getting bigger and bigger each year!  This years event kicked off with an invite-only VIP Press Party hosted downtown at the fabulous Styled by Nadia. Featuring exclusive fashion pieces which are hand-selected by Nadia herself, I have to say that she has impeccable style.  I wanted to buy EVERYTHING - and I almost did!

We had a lovely time exploring her boutique in the heart of downtown Columbia on Lady Street as they gave their guests the star treatment with the red carpet lining the entryway.  Nadia herself was just as sweet as she is fashionable. In the words of her brand, “Naida has a passion for helping women feel and look their best, regardless of budget.”  Oh, and they also serve wine on Thursdays, so be sure and plan a visit soon.

Picture

You could say that Nadia and I definitely see “eye to eye” where Southern fashion is concerned.  Neither of us took our sunglasses off the whole time!

#twinning

It was also a pleasure catching up with Carolina Eye Candy’s Ivonne C. while we were getting to know
Alicia Zeigler, the creator of #ColaFashionWeek. Everyone enjoyed munching on these custom Columbia Fashion Week cookies - so cute!

Picture
Sponsors of Fashion Week include Columbia Metropolitan Magazine, Jaguar Land Rover of Columbia, Whole Foods and WNOK 104.7. We went through the awesome items donated by sponsors in the gift bags that were given out to all of the attendees and chatted about using the generous promo by Carolina Eye Candy. If you are looking for a consultation with the go-to authority on eyelash enhancements and extensions in South Carolina, this is your place.
See www.carolinaeyecandy.com for more.

After scooping up my media pass for the week, a camera crew from News 19 WLTX walked in to cover the event.  Tuesday’s festivities included a pop up shop hosted by WLTX’s own Television Producer, Roshanda Pratt.  Friday featured the 8th annual Beautiful People Party - a who's who event of the most stylish citizens of Columbia.

I was proud to say that I knew one the winners of the Most Stylish in Columbia Awards, Miss Donna Anderson, owner of Bellah Modeling Agency.  Donna and I got to know each other well a few months ago while we were both helping with a runway show in Charleston, South Carolina that was produced by Gina Roberts, creator of Brooke Wilder Atelier and Off Runway Events.  This show featured some of the top designers in the industry who have dressed the likes of Gisele Bündchen and Miley Cyrus.

HERE ARE MY TOP 5 FAVORITE TRENDS FROM NEW YORK FASHION WEEK 2018

2/27/2018

TREND #1 REDEFINING WHAT “CLASSIC” MEANS TO US

“Calvin Klein showed lengthy gingham dresses that harkened back to Dorothy’s attire on her trip to Oz. Tory Burch filled her presentation with flowers, and had bucolic pieces to match. Zimmermann had saddle-esque belts around flouncy dresses and cowboy boots in a variety of shades. Jonathan Simkhai said he was referencing Gibson Girls, but his denim seperates and shoulder-bearing corset dresses recalled the saloons of the Old West much more so.”

TREND #2 DEFINING THE FUTURE
The Oracle: "So, let's get the obvious stuff out of the way."

Neo: "You're not human, are you?"
The Oracle: "It's tough to get any more obvious than that."
Some major vibes from the classic movie, “The Matrix” going on here…

TREND #3 TRACKSUITS

One of my personal favorites, wearing Tracksuits give off that rare vibe of coming across as somewhat put-together while also being comfy. Sign me up all day.
